The Philadelphia Orchestra Seeks to Recruit Several Key Team Members

The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the world’s preeminent orchestras. It strives to share the transformative power of music with the widest possible audience, and to create joy, connection, and excitement through music in the Philadelphia region, across the country, and around the world. The Orchestra transformed itself during the COVID-19 crisis and civil unrest. The Orchestra’s emerging narrative is one of adaptation and inclusion. In a remarkable show of institutional agility, the Orchestra quickly launched the Virtual Philadelphia Orchestra, providing a vast suite of musical and education content through digital formats. In response to the recent civic unrest, the Orchestra led the classical music industry by programming HearTOGETHER: A Healing Conversation in Music and Words. More recently, the Orchestra launched a full Digital Stage season of newly recorded and digitally released concert programs featuring Nézet-Séguin, guest conductors, and visiting soloists.

As the Orchestra plans for its eventual return to the concert hall, it is boldly led by President and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky and Music Director Nézet-Séguin. Their vision for the future of the Orchestra has inspired broad-based philanthropy from all sources. This vision has been equally inspirational to institutional funders, many of whom recognize the Orchestra’s deepening commitment to local communities and issues that matter most to the health and well-being of Greater Philadelphia. FUNDING: The Orchestra’s annual operating budget for FY 21 is approximately $33 million, with $17.5 million expected from all philanthropic sources. The endowment has a current market value of approximately $200 million Looking ahead, the institution has engaged fundraising counsel to conduct a feasibility study for an anticipated major comprehensive capital and endowment campaign.

NEW OPPORTUNITIES: The Orchestra is in the process of a strategic reorganization of its development department and now seeks to recruit several key team members, including the following two roles, each reporting to the Vice President, Development:

Assistant Vice President, Individual Giving: Lead a plan to build a robust pipeline of major donors and to increase philanthropy from individuals for annual, capital and endowment needs; manage a focused portfolio of major and planned gift donors and prospects; reimagine and build a nascent planned giving program; build, lead, and mentor a team in individual giving, major and planned gifts; support executive and volunteer leadership in their fundraising efforts.

Senior Director, Institutional Giving: Lead and execute a strategy to broaden and deepen existing and new relationships with institutional donors for unrestricted and restricted priorities; manage a portfolio of 40-45 corporate, foundation, and government donors and prospects; engage and advise executive and volunteer leadership on institutional giving opportunities; serve as an ambassador for the Orchestra in the business and philanthropic communities; work closely with program, education, and marketing teams to identify, activate, and maximize sponsorship relationships.

IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: Significant track record of success as a front-line fundraiser with demonstrated success in cultivating, soliciting, and closing gifts; successful experience in securing and increasing significant philanthropy, preferably in major performing arts or other cultural organizations; ability to identify new donors and interact with leaders in the corporate and philanthropic communities; management experience and success in a sophisticated and complex environment; a passion for and interest in music is preferred; excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills; proficient in MS Office and donor database software, Tessitura is preferred; outstanding interpersonal skills, diplomatic ability, and authenticity in manner and communication; ability to work successfully in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities; must be able to travel around the region, country, and internationally, as needed; willingness and availability to attend concerts and events regularly on evenings and weekends; genuine commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access—a core value of the institution; bachelor’s degree required.
