Masterpieces of Orientalist art offered at Bonhams 19th century picture sale in London

Three paintings by the Austrian Orientalist painter, Ludwig Deutsch (1885-1935), feature prominently in Bonhams 19th Century European, Victorian and British Impressionist Art in London on Wednesday 20 February 2019. At the Mosque (1895) is estimated at £300,000-500,000; Respect (1902) at £250,000-350,000), and The Performance (1885) at £100,000-150,000. The works have been in the same private collection for over 50 years. Deutsch was born in Vienna in 1855 into a prosperous Jewish family. He trained initially at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Vienna, moving to Paris in the mid-1870s to continue his studies. He settled permanently in the French capital in 1880, setting up a studio on Rue le Peletier (where in 1876 the second Impressionist exhibition had been held).
