LuminArte Gallery Hosts Solo Artist Exhibition: Waleed Arshad The Vortex Between Light and Dark

LuminArte Gallery Hosts Solo Artist Exhibition:

Waleed Arshad
The Vortex Between Light and Dark
February 16 – March 2, 2013
An artist reception will be held on February 16, 7 – 10 PM.

The vortex between light and dark pulls us into a black hole of distraction, a state of delusion brought on by the narcotizing effects of modern consumer culture. An individual becomes lost, intoxicated by triviality, and gives up control in a spiritual void. This is a state of exile from our true selves, our creative selves. Waleed Arshad, in a collaborative exchange with Phirip Divine and BroucLeon, creates a presentation of art and music in the service of salvation through artistic expression.

The opening reception and musical performance will be held on February 16, 2013 from 7 – 10PM at LuminArte Gallery, located at 1727 E. Levee St. in the Dallas Design District.

Iraqi-born artist, Waleed Arshad often explores themes of instability in his artwork, navigating the space between home and exile by depicting symbols of displacement.
After being targeted for his work, Arshad now lives in exile in the United States. Waleed reflects, “I have to feel myself as a human being, and I can’t be a real human being if I have to declare whether I am Shiite or Sunni.”

Exile is no easier. Asylum policies, plagued by ambivalent bureaucratic pitfalls, promote a limbo of disorientation, disqualification & dis- integration and corrode one’s sense of Self. In this state of uncertainty, loss of identity and control become an existential dilemma.

”œFor me, the ultimate task for the artist is to give his artwork its own existence, independent of the artist himself.” In Waleed’s new body of work, he has progressed beyond the status of ”œartist in exile” to further seek answers to the fundamental question of ”why do we exist?”
”œFor me, we exist to create.”

Phirip Divine is an up and coming emcee from Dallas, striving to bring the underground to the limelight and put substance back into music. BroucLeon is a Dallas rapper, challenging the general perception of Rap and Hip Hop. He describes his vision as an experimental conscious abundance of poetry, straddling the line between light and dark, and bound by no bounds. Poetry is one of his many loves in a life dedicated to music.
