This month's cover by internationally exhibited lenswoman Vee Speers anticipates FotoFest 2010 (which unveils in Houston March 12 through April 25).%26nbsp; FotoFest co-founder Wendy Watriss first encountered Speers%26#8217; work three years ago at a photographic event in Bucharest that was an outgrowth of FotoFest's acclaimed portfolio review The Meeting Place and subsequently exhibited her this fall in "International Discoveries II," where PaperCity's photo editor Jenny Antill spotted the captivating image that graces our cover and secured an exclusive for PaperCity. Untitled #16, 2007, a Cibachrome print from the artist's "The Birthday Party" series %26#8212; the title and subject of her second and most recent book%26nbsp; %26#8212; presents the world of childhood told through short photographic stories linked by the thread of an imaginary birthday party ($50, Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2009). Speers, an Australian artist who has resided in Paris since 1990, typifies the international focus and caliber of FotoFest. She has exhibited widely in culture capitals London, Paris, Miami, New York and Atlanta, and diverse countries including China, Japan, Brazil, Tunisia, Mexico and Australia. Her works are in esteemed private and public collections, from the photographic trove of Elton John to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and George Eastman House. About "The Birthday Party," she says: "I reveal a side of childhood that is not carefree ... I used the imaginary birthday party backdrop to address both our collective human experience of war and our need to retreat from it into fantasy." This volume follows her first worldwide release, Bordello, with a foreword by Karl Lagerfeld ($49.95, Edel Distribution GmbH 2006). For FotoFest%26#8217;s 2010 Biennial Fine Print Auction, Speers contributes the work shown here: Untitled #38, 2007, another unforgettable image from "The Birthday Party."
