REVERENCE, A solo exhibition by painter Dawn Waters Baker

The Big Bend Landscapes.

Unanimously selected by a prestigious juried panel for the NPAF artist in residence program, Baker received a small stipend along with room and board in exchange for a completed work to add the organization’s growing collection. “Dawn Waters Baker is exactly the sort of artist that makes our work at the National Parks Arts Foundation worthwhile,” enthused NPAF’s founder Tanya Ortega. “She has a unique eye that translates her wonder at these Big Bend landscapes into something powerful and visionary.” The residency is sponsored by the Big Bend Natural History Association (BBNHA).

Baker spent her first evening at Big Bend National Park “watching the sunset hit the Sierra del Carmen” and devoted the month of November creating plein air paintings, photographing reference material for later studio work, and observing the natural rhythm of the area. “The light causes the limestone rocks to glow oranges, purples and blues that are strikingly vivid and clean. As my time lengthened into weeks I was able to see more clearly the beauty through the vast silence and weather: The mountain profile against the sky; the soft mystery of clouds sitting as a blanket on the open desert; the incredible wild animals that make a life on this piece of earth,” Dawn Waters Baker described.

Reverence points to Dawn’s spiritual connection to nature and her role as observer. “She produces powerful landscape works exemplifying her love of
the outdoors. Undoubtedly having stemmed from living all over the world as her parents were missionaries,” says gallerist Mary Tomás. Baker adds: “The show’s title best describes how I felt about the people, landscape and animals that make up Big Bend National Park. My experience in the landscape,
through the artist residency, compelled me into a deeper place of awe. It was as if I had become one of those still rocks that passed through time by the cycle of the sun and rain and animal prints.”
