Jen Pack: Resonant Fragments Opening Artist Reception

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 25, 2017: Carneal Simmons Contemporary Art is pleased to announce our first solo exhibition for textile sculptor Jen Pack. Resonant Fragments opens with an artist’s reception on Saturday, September 9, 2017, from 5:00 to 8:30 PM, and will run through November 11, 2017. The artist will be in attendance from New Mexico.

“Many of the works in this show, Resonant Fragments, incorporate fragments of prior pieces into new ones. This synthesis is a physical manifestation of an attempt to subsume ambiguity and attain clarity. The work is made through an activity of intense seeing: seeing into the depths of color, looking past outer distractions to meaning that resides within deconstructed forms, listening to the hum of murmuring color. A couple of the pieces are earlier thread works that have resurfaced after receiving renewed interest this year. It is gratifying to re-visit past pieces with new eyes; it is an integration that lays a foundation for moving forward…”

“I have always been profoundly responsive to color and the sensations color can provoke. My work has been described as an artistic oxymoron: both loud and quiet, solid and transparent, hand-made and precise, delicate and aggressive, exuberant and restrained, formal and emotional. It is a reflection of me, an artist of blended culture who is both loud and quiet, urban and rural, delicate and aggressive, masculine and feminine, adventurous and routine.” —Jen Pack

Jen Pack received a BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 1997 and a MLIS from San Jose State University in 2008. Jen was born in the stormy seaside climate of rural northwest Oregon in 1976 and now resides in the sparse arid beauty of southwest New Mexico. She misses the ocean but finds solace in the high desert.

Pack’s work has been exhibited at institutions including the Cornell Art Museum, Delray Beach, FL, the Gallery at Thoreau Center, San Francisco, CA, the Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles, CA, the Arvada Center for the Arts, Arvada, CO, the Durango Art Center Art Library, Durango, CO, along with the RPS Collective, in Oakland, CA. Notably, the artist has work in the United States Embassy’s permanent collection located in Accra, Ghana.

Jen’s textile works have been featured in publications such as New American Paintings, Arte Fuse, The Journal of Cloth and Culture, American Craft Magazine, art ltd., The Oregonian, Portland Tribune, LA Times, Patron Magazine, and Artweek.
