Brian Cobble: Scratching the Surface

Valley House Gallery is honored to present our sixth exhibition of Brian Cobble’s luminous urban and rural landscapes. Cobble’s perception, dedication, and technical facility make him one of the finest artists working in pastel today. Cobble received his MFA from Southern Methodist University where he studied with Roger Winter who lauds, In a clamoring market-driven art world, Brian Cobble’s contribution is, indeed, blessed assurance to each of us that delicacy of drawing and subtlety of sight still exist.

Cobble’s works are in the collections of the Dallas Museum of Art; the New Mexico Museum of Art, Santa Fe; the El Paso Museum of Art; the Tyler Museum of Art; and The Columbus Museum, Georgia. Cobble’s work has been exhibited at The McKinney Avenue Contemporary, Dallas; The Grace Museum, Abilene; the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans; and the Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio.

Cobble states: In a broad sense, Scratching the Surface is what I do. With an approach that requires applying stroke after stroke and layer upon layer of sharpened pastels, making art is monumentally slow and indirect, (and occasionally zen-like). And somehow, somewhere along the way, if one is persistent, and lucky, and the subconscious kicks in properly, a little magic or mystery or atmosphere sneaks into the painting, and just maybe you scratch the surface of something deeper.

Opening Reception: Saturday, May 30, 5:30 – 8:00 pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, May 30, 11:00 am
