Camerata Pacifica Seeks Senior Executive of Administration

Strongly positioned to surge forward once the pandemic eases, Camerata Pacifica seeks a leader to rebuild the administrative infrastructure to support live performances beginning in the Fall.

Camerata Pacifica is a premium chamber music ensemble. Founded in 1990 by Artistic Director Adrian Spence, the group is based in Santa Barbara, CA and performs subscription series in 4 Southern Californian cities: Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Marino & Los Angeles. Camerata Pacifica enjoys a reputation for artistic & programming excellence and over 32 seasons has developed a loyal, durable and intellectually curious audience.

This is an international ensemble, drawing its musicians from all over the world. Our artists are representative of the world’s finest, bringing to the stage their highly individual personalities for dynamic performances of music that spans the huge, eclectic range of the chamber music repertoire. Those performances are presented in venues which enhance the intimate and viscerally expressive qualities of the music — an exploration of that intimacy is a critical component of our performances.

In 2020 Camerata Pacifica developed a landmark resource for hospitals entitled The Nightingale Channel. Drawing upon our extensive video library, the initiative delivers curated programming to patient bedsides, offering interest and solace when it can be particularly meaningful. The program will launch in 2021 in a collaboration with UCLA Health.

Camerata Pacifica has an overall operating budget approaching $1.5 million and is governed by a Board of Directors populated with representatives from each city in which the ensemble performs.

Position Summary

The precise responsibilities and title of the proposed position will be defined in response to the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.

The position will be responsible for, but not limited to, the management of all human and financial resources required to realize Camerata Pacifica’s mission; accountable for all aspects of the organization and for implementing policies set by the board of directors. This position oversees the policies and programs related to administrative, budgetary, staffing, marketing, fundraising, and advocacy activities, and, along with the Artistic Director, will be a public face for the organization in community activities and patron/donor relations. Leadership skills and management experience are critical, along with the ability to assemble an effective staff and work effectively with board and community members.

Beyond bureaucratic duties, for the successful candidate there lies an opportunity for visionary, creative leadership.

The post-Covid world will offer boundless opportunities to completely redefine the concert experience. Camerata Pacifica’s Artistic Director prefers an executive partner with whom to reimagine every aspect of the ensemble’s performance presentations — from the moment an audience member enters the lobby to when they leave, a Camerata concert must be unmistakably live — impossible to replicate online.

Camerata Pacifica enjoys a vital commissioning program which has produced 16 new pieces of music, with another 3 works currently in development, all by women composers. Commissioning offers a creative platform for an exploration of diversity and the development of new musical voices.

Early in 2021 The Nightingale Channel debuts in one of the nation’s most prestigious hospitals, UCLA Health. The program will be offered to hospitals and retirement communities across the country, and its content constantly refined to present a compelling case for the integration of music and wellness.

Reports to: Camerata Pacifica Board of Directors.
Directly Supervises: all production staff, patron services manager, operations manager, and all contracted services.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategic Vision and Leadership

  • Lead Camerata Pacifica in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Work with the Board of Directors on strategic planning to ensure success and stability into the future.
  • Advance new ideas and visions in a highly competitive international environment.
  • Stay abreast of the evolving and dynamic nature of the music industry.
  • Promote a strong local, national, and international presence for Camerata Pacifica.
  • Enhance the organization’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.
  • Motivate, energize and inspire donors and audience members.

Operations

  • Support the Artistic Director and musicians to produce exemplary concert experiences.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, orientation, retention, and evaluation of staff.
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of Camerata Pacifica to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Responsible for the fiscal management of the administration for the organization, operating within the approved budget and ensuring maximum use of resources.
  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support Camerata Pacifica’s mission.
  • Approve effective marketing and development plans, working closely with staff to be sure that all targets are met.

Stakeholder Cultivation and Engagement

  • Represent Camerata Pacifica at the highest level at concerts, public events, in the media, and beyond.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of a strong Board of Directors.
  • Embrace donor cultivation and engagement opportunities.

The successful candidate will be an entrepreneurial, innovative leader, responsive in a fluid environment, who will assist organizational growth and development. This individual will be an authentic listener and consensus builder who demonstrates an ability to earn the admiration and respect of donors, artists and staff. This individual will embrace new opportunities to propel the institution to the next level of international growth and recognition.

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or higher.
  • Minimum of five years of demonstrated administrative leadership in the arts or creative industries.
  • Knowledgeable about the direction of the music industry today and about the new opportunities occasioned by the pandemic over the last year.
  • Significant knowledge of music performance at the international level and a dedication to the arts as a cornerstone of the human experience.
  • Familiarity with fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector.
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers.
  • Exceptional written and spoken communication skills.
