Conceived in 1994 by Craighead Green Gallery, New Texas Talent is designed to introduce and promote emerging visual artists in the commercial market. Each year over 1,000 images are submitted for review by a gallery selected juror. The juror then independently selects artists to participate in the New Texas Talent exhibition. Through their participation in the show, some artists have been offered representation by galleries and/or have been extended invitations for inclusion in future exhibitions. The exhibitions, and its participants, have also received media exposure in such publications as Patron Magazine, A+C Texas, D Magazine, The Dallas Morning News, and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. www.craigheadgreen.com
About the Juror:
This year’s juror is Andrea Karnes, curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. As curator, Ms. Karnes has presented many successful and challenging exhibitions, both group and solo. She is acting curator of the Modern’s FOCUS series, and also contributing author for Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth: 110, the Museum’s permanent collection catalogue published in 2002. Ms. Karnes received her Master’s degree in Art History at Texas Christian University in May 2000. Her interest in Texas art and emerging artists proved to be a perfect match as curator for NTT 2014.
Ms. Karnes comments about being an art juror…..”It is always good to see what’s going on in your own backyard – and in the case of the NTT 2014 competition – a lot of great things are happening. The process of judging the works to be included in this prestigious exhibition was a true honor for me. It was also challenging beyond compare during the selection phase. There were so many remarkable entries that I found it honestly agonizing to choose only 50 works; and letting go of so many accomplished artist was brutal.”
Ms. Karnes selections include a strong presence of photography. Respected photographer and Professor, Kenda North, head of the University of Texas, Arlington’s photography department, gladly reported that Karnes selected 6 of her department’s current or past students. North is also represented by Craighead Green Gallery. New Texas Talent has proven to be successful in many ways. Our goal is to offer gallery exposure to artists of all ages across the state. Each year this event has proven to draw one of the largest gallery opening crowds. In the 21 years of New Texas Talent, many artists have received gallery representation as a result of this competition. Collectors, gallery owners and many art educators look forward to viewing the juror’s selections each year.
